Description

Cucurbita maxim

A home-grown alternative to sweet potatoes.

Bon Bon produces decent yields of good-size fruits: the largest ones average about 17cm in diameter and 1.9kg in weight. The skin of the fruit is dark slate grey and decorated with lighter grey stripes and a cup at the blossom end. The flesh is bright orange, and the eating quality is superb – its thick texture is accentuated by a sweet, almost honey-like, taste.

As with most winter squashes, the flesh can be cut into small cubes and roasted,  mashed like potatoes, or pureed to make a delicious one-crust pie.

The plants need plenty of space as the trailing vines can grow up to 5 metres long.
