When deciding which tomato varieties to grow there are two big decisions to make:

• The type of plant do you want: Indeterminate (cordon) varieties are tall plants that will need support and must be pinched out; determinate (bush) plants are less work as they need no pinching out and no support, but they may be less productive and often not quite so good tasting.

• The type of fruit you want: tomatoes vary enormously between size, shape, colour and even texture and juiciness. They also have very different flavours, some taste wonderful, others are pretty awful! So choose carefully!
