Cichorium intybus

An easy-to-grow chicory distinguished by its large, cone-shaped heads that look a little like cos lettuces. The broad leaves have a gentle, tasty bitterness, and wrap around each other so that the inner leaves are blanched by the outside ones.

The heads are generally firm and grow about 40cm tall. Known in English as ‘sugar loaf’, this is a versatile chicory, ideal for cooking and using fresh in salads.

Approx. number of seeds per pack: 400 seeds

Comments

• In 2025, we got good results from both April and July sowings (grown outdoors), and from an October sowing (grown overwinter in a polytunnel).
•Multiple harvests can be made when young plants are managed in a cut-and-grow-again system.
•We like making salads from chopped-up leaves mixed with onions and sweet peppers. Add some salt and pepper, and dress with oil and vinegar for a delicious, simple fresh dish.
