Apple Crisp

Bite into this very mild chilli and the flesh so sweet, crisp and juicy it is like eating an apple.

Heat level: approx. 400 SHU

Capsicum annuum

This chilli is like nothing else we know. The fruit, which are roughly sphere shape, are bigger than a large crab apple (38 x 46mm) and ripen from pale green to orange and finally red. They are extremely mild, and their flesh is sweet and exceptionally thick. But what makes this chilli really stand out is the texture of the fruit – bite into it like an apple and you encounter a crunchy, juicy flesh, and a skin that is so tender you don’t notice it is there.

We don’t say this for many chillies, but Apple Crisp is one best eaten out of hand – like an apple.

The plants are large, and easily reach over a metre in height with a 90cm spread. They can be grown in the ground or in large pots – 10 litres is ideal. Plants, main stem and branches, will need supporting.

Heat level: very mild (400 SHU).
