A tropical bean grown for its immature green pods that are at their best when 30 to 40cm long (rather than a yard long, as the name suggests).
The pods are produced on vigorous vines that should be trained up canes or strings. Given the bean’s tropical origin, the plants thrive in a warm environment and grow brilliantly through the summer in a tunnel or greenhouse.
