Cherry Falls

£2.50

A valuable bush tomato that is compact and extremely early, so good for growing outdoors and in small spaces.

Fruit type: very small, round

Description

Solanum lycopersicum

Cherry Falls is a valuable determinate (bush) tomato that has a lot in its favour.

It is, for example, very early maturing and consequently a good choice for growing outdoors in sheltered gardens located in warmer parts of the UK. In addition, the small, bushy growth habit of the plants means they can fit comfortably in tight spaces such as on a greenhouse bench. And whether grown undercover or in the open, the plants are good producers of red, cherry-like fruit.

Though other varieties are better tasting, Cherry Falls is a top choice when earliness, compactness and good yields are priorities.

Approximate number of seeds per pack: 15

Additional information

General information

The variety ‘Micro Cherry’ is probably the same as the variety sold as ‘Hundreds and Thousands’, or even '100s and 1000s'. We use the name ‘Micro Cherry’ since that is how the seed was sold to us.
.
We have wanted to sell Micro Cherry for some time. Unfortunately, a source of seed eluded us until 2020, when one of our wholesalers started to stock it.

Fruit numbers

In 2020, we grew a plant of the tomato Microcherry in a 10 litre pot to check its ability to produce fruit. Though sowing was done quite late (22nd June), the plant was grown undercover and managed to produce a total of 912 red, orange and green fruit by 5th October.
.
Encouraged by the 2020 result, we upped the stakes in 2021. This time the seed was sown on 1st April, and two plants were grown undercover in 50cm hanging baskets that held about 27 litres of compost.
.
The baskets were watered regularly, and the plants were initially given a liquid feed of fertiliser once a week. Feeling that the plants could do better we upped the feeding regime to twice-a-week from mid August.
.
Ripe fruit were harvested between 27th July and 18th December. Both fruit number and weights were recorded, and the yields were phenomenal – they averaged just over 12kg and 6,000 fruit per plant.
.
The results for the individual plants are as follows:
• Plant 1: 6,016 fruit; 12.2 kg
• Plant 2: 6,043 fruit, 12.6 kg
Average yields: 6,031 fruit and 12.4 kg
