Honey Bear

£3.00

An acorn type winter squash yielding a surprisingly good number of fruit on bushy plants.

Description

Cucurbita pepo

An acorn type winter squash yielding a surprisingly good number of fruit on bushy plants suitable for tight spaces. The green-skinned fruit are a small, useful size – they average between 600 to 700 g each and measure around 11cm in diameter.

The light yellow flesh is a pleasure to eat, and it can be described as “sweet, smooth and moist”. A great squash to cut in half and roast for single servings.

Additional information

2023 trial

The description for Honey Bear was taken from the results of our 2023 trial of winter squashes, when we grew three plants of each variety.
.
The average yield of Honey Bear from our trial was 4.3 fruit per plant, which was good considering the bushy growth habit of Honey Bear. The Royal Horticultural Society conducted a winter squash trial from 2010 to 2011, when the average yield they attained was 4.8 fruit per plant.

More information

a) Fruit should be harvested when they are mature, which is sometime in the autumn. Fortunately, maturity of Honey Bear is easily determined: the fruit develop a yellow spot where they touch the ground.
.
There is, however, an exception to the maturity rule. Because of Honey Bear’s bushy growth habit, some of the fruit are suspended in mid-air and don’t develop a so-called ‘ground spot’.
.
b) Fruit should be brought undercover before the first frost.
.
c) Harvest with secateurs, leaving about 2 to 3cm of stem on the fruit.
